HTMA (Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis)

In this world of biohacking, constant detoxing, and the latest fountain-of-youth-promised gadgets, diets, etc, HTMA testing along with Mineral Balancing offers a TRUE root cause approach to so many "complex" problems, that really aren't complex.

Minerals drive thousands of reactions in our body, working tirelessly behind the scenes to keep us alive and thriving! Would it surprise you to know that gut, hormones, etc are NOT root cause? Minerals are required to drive ALL of these bodily systems and enzymatic/chemical reactions.

What exactly, is an HTMA?

Directly from ARL Labs (who I exclusively work with for HTMA, see FAQ page for more info on that)

"
A hair tissue mineral analysis performed by Analytical Research Labs, Inc., is a screening test for the level of 20 minerals and toxic metals in a sample of hair. It is a tissue mineral biopsy that is:
  • non-invasive
  • relatively inexpensive
  • extremely accurate
Providing a mineral blueprint of one's biochemistry, a hair tissue mineral analysis can provide pertinent information about one's metabolic rate, energy levels, and stage of stress."

In other words, HTMA allows us to get a glimpse into bodily processes, see where they are deficient, and correct these deficiencies with proper mineral supplementation along with addressing lifestyle patterns that aren't serving us!

Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis is actually not a new concept. It has been around for about 60 years and is used in many labs globally. It IS gaining popularity, particularly in the holistic health world, for reasons we will soon discuss.

Who was Dr. Paul Eck?

Dr. Paul Eck made HTMA his life's work. Mineral Balancing was his baby! This brilliant man was a biochemist and physician who dedicated most of his adult life to evaluating major research studies in biochemistry, nutrition, physiology, pathology and psychology. By the end of his life, he had analyzed thousands upon thousands of hair mineral tests.

Through his years of working with hair tissue testing, he came to see that the HTMA was able to measure the body's stress response. Instead of analyzing the separate mineral levels on a hair test, ALL of the mineral levels had to be interpreted as a whole (the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts, kind of thing).

Dr Eck realized that every single one of the minerals interacted with one another on an HTMA test. For example, when a mineral appears low on an HTMA, it may actually be low.  Othertimes, it may be compensating for another mineral imbalance.

To balance one’s mineral levels as a whole, these compensations must be properly understood and accounted for. Certain minerals may either raise or lower other minerals.
For example, quite often a practitioner can raise a client's potassium level without using potassium at all, and instead using the element zinc. Butttt, they would have to look at their client's HTMA test as a whole, in order to know if this is indeed the right move!

*This is why you don't want to just randomly supplement single minerals without knowing what YOU as an individual, actually need! You could be doing much more harm than good.*

What can an HTMA tell you about your health?

You may be plesantly surprised! Here are a few things we can glean from a proper interpretation of an HTMA:
  • thyroid and adrenal function
  • blood sugar imbalances
  • metabolic rates/imbalances
  • overall energy in the body
  • mineral deficiencies that lead to inflammatory and degenerative conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, and more
  • STRESS (we all have it!) including what stage YOU are in
  • heavy metal toxicity (including if you are having problems ELIMINATING metals)
